Today is Friday the 13^th.  As is custom here at Obstructed Views it’s time for a special holiday edition.  We have previously done a Friday the 13^th edition in January of last year and you can read it by clicking here.  In keeping with the Obstructed Views tradition here are 13 more facts about Friday the 13^th, if you have Friggatriskaidekaphobia maybe you should stop reading now.

1.       There is no consensus on when or why Friday the 13^th is unlucky but Friday has been considered unlucky since The Canterbury Tales.  Jesus was also crucified on a Friday and it is believed that Eve tempted Adam with the fruit on a Friday,  adding to the folklore

2.       This is the first Friday the 13^th in 2013.  The next one will be in December.

3.       In Spanish speaking countries, Tuesday the 13^th is considered the unlucky day

4.       In Italy 13 is actually considered lucky, it’s Friday the 17^th they’re scared of.

5.       The 13^th of a month is more likely to be on a Friday than any other day.

6.       You have 1/214 probability of being born on Friday the 13^th

7.       If you have 13 letters in your name you are considered to have Devil’s Luck – , Charles Manson, Jeffery Dahmer, Theodore Bundy, hell, even Jack the Ripper

8.       On October 13^th 1972 a plane carry the Uruguay Rugby team crashed in the Andes Mountains.  The movie Alive is based off this incident

9.       There is no 13^th Avenue in San Francisco.

10.   Celebrating a birthday on this Friday the 13^th – Tyler Perry, Ben Savage, Fiona Apple, and Sprinter Michael Johnson

11.   These celebrities were born on Friday the 13^th Butch Cassidy, Fidel Castro, Margaret Thatcher, Alfred Hitchcock, Peter Tork, Steve Buscemi, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Darius Rucker, and the Olsen Twins

12.   Friday the 13^th was extremely unlucky for 2Pac, Julia Child and Tim Russert who all died on Friday the 13^th. 

13.   2Pac died exactly 17 years ago today: Friday September 13th, 1996.

Friday the 13th

It has become an Obstructed Views’ tradition to do a “holiday” post.  So why should Friday the 13^th be any different?  Maybe it’s my own superstitions but here are 13 “freaky” facts about Friday the 13^th:

1.       In 2012 there are 3 Friday the 13ths – January, April, and July

2.       The next Friday the 13^th in April is….13 weeks away…..and July 13^th is exactly….13 weeks after that

3.       The fear of Friday the 13^th is known as Friggatriskaidekaphobia

4.       Most buildings in America do not have a 13^th floor, many hospitals don’t have a room 13^th, and many airlines don’t have a row 13

5.       Friday the 13^th will cost many businesses between $800-$900 million because people are afraid to travel, make major purchases, or conduct business

6.       13 is considered unlucky (irregular) because it follows 12 which is a considered a complete number….12 months in a year, 12 zodiac signs, 12 eggs in a dozen…etc….

7.       Friday the 13^th happens at least once every year and no more than 3 times in a year.

8.       Franklin Delano Roosevelt would not travel on the 13^th of any month and would never have just 13 dinner guests…he also refused to travel on the 13^th

9.       On the back of the dollar bill:  There are 13 steps on the pyramid, 13 stars above the eagles head, 13 war arrows in the eagles claw, 13 leaves on the olive branch, 13 bars and stripes on the shield, 13 letters in the "E Pluribus Unum" on the ribbon…..
