Don't Believe the Hype

Is it better to be over prepared, inconvenienced, and safe or not be prepared, not be inconvenienced and risk grave danger?  If you ask me the choice is simple.  In the aftermath of Hurricane Irene I’ve seen all over the news and in the newspapers people with the audacity to bitch at the media and the National Hurricane center about “overhyping” the recent hurricane.  My my my, what short memories these idiots have.

Did we forget that just 6 years ago Hurricane Katrina ravished the Gulf Coast?  If I remember correctly people crucified just about everyone because the residents of the Gulf Coast were not adequately notified of the severity of the storm.  Now because you were “inconvenienced” you’re bitching.  I just don’t get it.  Some of these people were probably the same ones bitching about the handling of Katrina.  As far as I’m concerned these people should have been blown away in the storm.

All these “whiners” are now going to ruin it for the next storm.  Why?  Well now they claim that people won’t take the next one as seriously due to the “overhype”.   To me this is idiotic.  Was the storm as bad as originally predicted?  I guess it depends on who you ask.  There are some people in the Philadelphia area that still don’t have power.  There are some people whose homes were destroyed.  Amtrak is still not running.  That seems pretty bad to me.  I agree that this was an odd storm.  In Philadelphia we got hit much harder than those at the Jersey shore.  It happens.  If I lived in Jersey and I knew a storm was coming, I’d get the fuck out of dodge.  If it wasn’t as bad as predicted, I’d be relieved not upset.

People are constantly complaining about meteorologists, whether it’s because of “winter storms of the century” or whatever.   Listen, predicting the weather is an inexact science.  You can get an idea of what’s to come but Mother Nature has her own mind.  Lay off of these people.  If you’d have been told it wasn’t going to be that bad and they you got slammed you’d be singing a different tune.  As far as I’m concerned there’s an old saying that’s good to live by; “Better Safe than Sorry”.  Don’t forget what happened with Katrina.  Shut the fuck up and get over it.  That is all.

  1. I love your direct approach and, yes, I'd be feeling relieved as well if I had missed the brunt of the storm (many people didn't) and I certainly wouldn't be complaining! Love eyour blog and I'll be back!

  2. Jim, Kyle-
Nice take on this, indeed. I think you hit it on the head with "short memories." We all have these, and sometimes it's indicative of something much deeper, usually our fears. And the one thing people fear the most is being WRONG.

Frankly, I'm with you. I'll take "overprepared and wrong" over "underprepared and wrong" any day of the week.

Looking forward to reading more of your take on...everything!
